Happy New Year and what a year it is going to be! This year we are celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Little Sisters of the Poor being in Mobile!
The Little Sisters first arrived in Mobile, Alabama on the Feast of the Sacred Heart on June 13, 1901, at the request of Bishop Edward Allen. Major Patrick C. Hannan graciously donated the first Home and property on McGill Avenue and Monterey Street. In November 1901, the Little Sisters welcomed the first Residents, and a year later already had forty residents in their Home!
Over the years the demand resulted in the need for a larger Home and in February 1914, the second Home was finished that could accommodate one hundred residents. That served as the Home for over fifty years until plans began for a new home to be built to meet new fire codes and regulations. Construction began on a new building, and the new Sacred Heart Residence welcomed Residents into the new Home on January 28, 1976. This has remained the home of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Mobile for the last fifty years.
For one hundred and twenty-five years, the Little Sisters have been in the same location, doing the same mission, and caring for the neediest elderly along the Gulf Coast. They continue to serve the elderly poor in the same humble spirit as their foundress Saint Jeanne Jugan and are a true blessing to the community.
Throughout this year, we will be celebrating the Little Sisters, Sacred Heart Residence, and their history in Mobile. We will look back at all they have accomplished and look forward to all the wonderful things that lie ahead in the future.
